Any experience in obtaining holiday travel/medical insurance for a 67 year old male with a pre-existing health condition (atrial fibrillation) I am contemplating a BVI charter in late February. Most of the run of the mill insurance companies aren't inerested in anything out of the ordinary.
Also, any weather advice on late Feb. In BVI ?

I bank with HSBC, I pay the 12.95 a month for the Advance account. With it comes travel insurance, good travel insurance. I have atrial fib, hi blood pressure, prostate cancer and acid reflux probs. Whilst I was actively being treated for the cancer it wasnt covered. Now it is, along with the rest of the complaints. I have just phoned them up to confirm I was covered as I went to Israel last week. Yes I was, they even sent a letter to say I was. You would need to check on the age limits. I am 64.
It also covers all my vehicules for breakdown and get you home, a massive saving on the 70 quid a year i was paying for each vehicule.

Try Co-op Insurance. They gave me a reasonable value annual insurance when Saga would only offer expensive single trip policy.

Another vote for HSBC. We have a Premier account, which was their way of keeping our ISA deposits when top rates were only available to holders of that account. Like Stu, I have difficulty in getting any form of travel insurance elsewhere. However, never claimed on any insurance so no idea whether it is any good when it counts.

Santander

I have a premium account with Santander which includes annual travel insurance. However there are restrictions (I don't think sailing is classed as a risky activity) but existing health issues can only be included for an additional premium (which is quite high). On recent overseas trips I've not bothered to include extra for my diabetic condition.

Hi!
Travel Insurance mainly covers all kind of emergency and risks. They will cover you from the day you leave your home till the day you reach back to your home. The also provide certain premiums or packages for children, adults and senior citizens.Well the amount of premium vary from person to person according to their existing heath conditions.

Whatever insurance you eventually take do read the exclusions in fine detail. Pre-existing conditions are almost always excluded.

Should anything untoward happen on vacation when travelling alone you may have difficulties in meeting the requirement that the insurer takes over the provision of any expensive treatment, hospital admission or repatriation benefits before commitments are entered into.

Expect to pay not less than 150 pds a year and probably quite a bit more. And have to meet a considerable excess.

Try protectyourbubble.com - a broker but with policies that cover older clients.

I use InsureandGo and was repatriated by them from the BVI 4 years ago when I suffered a suspected heart attack (which, with hindsight, was probably just severe AF with angina). Fortunately I had declared ALL my pre-existing conditions and paid a hefty additional premium to cover the angina which had only recently been diagnosed.

In the event of a claim, the insurance company will check with your GP - they demanded my medical records for the previous 3 years - before they accept liability. This meant in my case that I was languishing in hospital on Tortola for 3 days not knowing if they would cover the cost. Once they had agreed they were liable, though, the service could not be faulted. They flew a doctor out to accompany me home, we had a private air ambulance from the BVI to Barbados, Business class back to Gatwick with oxygen all the way and a new Mercedes E class taxi home. I felt a bit of a fraud, to be honest, as I felt fine the whole way.

If you try InsureandGo don't be put off by the computer screening. If the computer says no, talk to them - they have some discretion in giving cover. Also, negotiate; like all insurance companies, they can find reasons to reduce the premium to get the business.

My final advice to everyone is to fully declare ALL your pre-existing conditions as they will check your medical history in the event of a claim.
