Trapper 28 / Yanmar YSE8

Couple of questions really....

Anyone ever re-engined a Trapper 28 with a Yanmar YSE8 / 1GM10 or the like? Space is very limited and I'm in need of a nice reliable low-maintenance engine instead of the current inboard petrol

Does anyone know about the Yanmar YSE8? Trying to get dimensions and the handbooks on-line seem to just give parts/maintenance advice
 
Very old engine now so you may have difficulty getting info and or parts
It has the advantage of being flat and lasts well but I would not think long term answer
The installation cost are usually higher with an older engine especially stating from scratch as not all components are included or fit to reuse so unless the engine is refurbished and free forget it.
With regard to Yse The bearers are different for a front flywheel engine as opposed to the majority of current engines that have a mid flywheel.

I replaced the Dolphin petrol engine in my old T28 with a new Beta BZ42. Did it over the course of a winter, hardest bit was removing the old bearers fabricating new ones. Space is tight but it went in with enough room to undertake maintenance (just). Work also involved new fuel tank and wet exhaust all straightforward. Well worth the effort though felt like a different boat under power.
 
my trapper 500 had the yanmar in and we replaced it with a Beta 14. I assume the 28 has much the same sort of room. if the 28 is the same (roughly) as the 500 i would have thought a 1GM10 ( I had one on the last boat) would be too small.

trouble is the YSE8 dates from the days when 'gentlemen' sailed and used engines as auxiliaries only. it might be the 12hp versaion (i know there was one) but i find the 14 just right for pushing the boat against the wind and the tide.

i can thoroughly recommend the beta although the nanni i think is the same basic kubota diesel and i know there are marginal differences in fitting. its a twin which makes for much smoother runing and you'll welcome the extra power.

it is very tight - you have to top up oil and water with small 1 litre containers to get the right angle and you'll have to bend the dipstick to get it in and out, but frankly the old yanmar wasn't easy to work on either

at least think about the 14 and maybe you'll get specific advice on the Trapper owners site
 
The yse8 12hp version was called a yse12:rolleyes:
I had a trapper 300 with a ysb8, Although some trapper 28s were sold with YSE/B 8s you will find it underpowered if you did put one in.
I would definintly advise against it on that respect.
The good thing about them is they run for ever on a gallon of diesel.
