Hi,
I was faced with exactly the same problem when we bought our boat off of the Dart .
There are lots of choices open to you , a lot depends on the size of the boat , weight and so on.
If it is not so large then any of the transport companies would probably move it for you, most are used to the work and do it without much fuss, if a little expensive.
Our boat was 12 tones , 37 ft long and 11 ft beam, too large for some of the transport companies, also there was the problem of the lift off at the end of the journey, which was to be on an old airfield. They wanted about £800 a lift , but only to the outside as they couldn't get the height inside the hanger, it was a problem , I would still have needed some way of moving the boat once she was delivered, and I would have had to do this all again once she was completed.

Our choice in the end was to buy a 40ft flatbed lorry trailer and convert it to take our boat, this basicaly meant welding three supports either side and a central bed for the keel. She was loaded onto this at the boatyard in Totness and delivered where she needed to be , cost of this was £250.00 ( 70 miles)
I paid £900.00 for the trailer and £150.00 for the steel supports done the welding myself and the whole job took about a week to complete.

What are the advantages, well the boat has stayed on the trailer for the whole two years , the transport company simply has to come and pick it up to take back to the docks for launch by normal crane, ie I havent had to pay twice for a mobile crane to lift it on an off of the trailer. At the end I still have the trailer to sell .
Because the trailer is over a certain width ( nine and a half feet I think ! ) it dosn't need an MOT but you have to get the haulier to get permission for a wide load movement order , any haulier who does wide loads knows about this anyway.

If you are interested I can give you the address of the chap that moved my boat.
I guess it depends what work you have to do, everyone has different plans.
