Following on from my post regarding surveyors, I'm looking for specialized boat transport companies to transport a 37 foot yacht from Portsmouth to Glasgow. If anyone knows of any could they drop me a line please. TIA

google boat transport portsmouth and you will get plenty of choices, most have on line quotes and will respond in 24 hours. Solent/Clyde is a regular route and good chance of getting a return load to keep cost down. I used South West.

John Shepherd brought mine from Inverness to Ipswich, very happy with him

To what extent do these boat transport companies make arrangements with the boatyard/marina from which the boat is to be collected and delivered to?

Can everything be left to them to organise or does the owner of the boat have to be there?

Poignard,
I was up there when they loaded but John Shepherd made all the arrangements for pick up with Inverness Marina, I turned up at Ipswich 2 days later and boat was already in travel hoist at 6.30 am being unloaded. Ipswich had asked me for estimated delivery time but had drivers Mob number anyway. More or less done with little input from me

Whatever you want and feel comfortable with. I have used transport twice, first one I was present at both ends and organised the yard ends. Second one did all remotely and only saw the boat when it was blocked off this end.

These guys (and most yards) are professionals and do this sort of thing every day. All you have to do is instruct the yards and transport clearly, pay up front including the despatch yard then leave it to them.

Surely it depends what state the boat is in at the point of departure. I would want all the gear well stowed below so that can’t get damaged - or damage the interior woodwork etc.
Similarly would want to carefully stow sails, boom, spinnaker pole etc for the road. How left when in harbour or on the hard May not be suitable for a bumpy road trip.
On arrival clearly is less of an issue - though generally tend to be there from an interest point of view.

That is what I meant by giving clear instructions. With my last boat which was in Neyland, I left it after spending a couple of days with the surveyor and stowing most stuff safely. Left dropping the mast and windgen pole and preparing for transport to the yard. The mast and boom were going to a different location from the boat so were carried under the boat rather than on top of the boat.

In the past it's been the owner who does the organising, arrange lift out to coincide with transport arrival day and time. Arranging for the unstepping of mast. Lots of work to do before transport arrives.

For my first boat coming from Cowes, the broker in Lymington called a couple of local transporters but said that their prices were ridiculous then said he would try Shepherd. He said instantly that he could arrange a delivery to the south to reduce the cost and I left the arrangements to the broker. It turned out that it was best to get the boat moved to Lymington marina and he arranged for the owner to deliver it there the day before uplift. Shepherd told him, and he passed the message to me, that as the driver may need to stop overnight he would inform Largs Yacht Haven of when he would arrive.

There was no broker involved with my next boat, which was ashore in Gosport at Hornet. Shepherd arranged for the uplift and again there was a need for an overnight break. In this case at their depot, as the driver's hours were nearly up by the time he was coming up the A74M. I had told Largs that the boat was coming and they were quite laid back about the time. I think that again th driver calls them with an estimate.

Is it possible to ask if anyone's happy to share a rough estimate for how much it cost to transport their boat that distance? Mine's getting on for 10 tonnes. (still new to this world and considering moving boat closer to home to work on)
