Transponders , who needs em

Now we are all friends again............ pic 8401 still could be echo trans.. if it has a really thick block it goes through on the outside of the hull. You can see similarities from my pic below.
I just happen to be in the same room as a vernier and transducer ... The threaded shaft is 16mm diameter and 81mm long.
The seafarer echo sounder with the rotary flashing light used this transducer and that must be 50 yrs ago ?
Mine is new. Only difference being the threaded shaft is much shorter than it used to be. Its possible that overtightning the nut puts undue strain of its shaft leading to snapping. Its just really bad luck yours snapped off when undone. Couldnt be avoided.

I would also expect a better initial description and request construction.

Then you clearly did not read the initial post and understand that any shortcomings of omissions were because I did not know what I was talking about out. Worry not, I shall leave this forum and seek help from those who are willing to give it without using the opportunity to show just how clever they are. THAT is not teaching, that is just saying, hey look I know more than you do.

Thank you for the help, shame others mistake being a smart Alec for offering help. Maybe you moderators should explain the difference between giving advice and simply showing that you know more than the person asking the question. From your help and what I know of what’s fitted to my boat I can tell that I indeed have this transducer and yes it’s unfortunate that it has snapped off flush with the wooden base plate inside the hull. Fortunately is is bonded pretty well using a wooden block fixed to the outside holding the larger element flush to the hull. As a short term fix I intend screwing a piece of brass across the face of the unit just to stop any tendency for it to abandon ship, under the hull and replace the entire thing when we haul out in November . Thank you again for your advice. It was all I needed but clearly some on here have a price for their assistance which is to have free rein to demonstrate just how clever they are and how stupid the newbie is.

Seriously ... don't give up here ... yes it can be a tough place at times ... I can attest to the fact of having been the recipient of possibly the worst insults ever on this forum some years ago ... but I came back as it is a wealth of info.

OK ... lets look at matters :

My boat has two Transponders, transducers both fitted as through hulls on the aft quarter port and starboard. Trouble is I don’t know which one is which.

One I would suggest is DEPTH and other is SPEED.

The boat was previously fitted with an auto pilot ( previous owner sold it off leaving the transponder and cable in situ.

Autopilot has nothing to do with the two 'ducers'.

I also have a NASA depth gauge which is running amok giving absolutely daft fluctuating readings which others tell me Is down to air bubbles, no oil

Depth tranducers are often in GRP boats fitted into a Tube bonded to the inside of the hull - this tube has oil / water in it depending on owners choice to give airless conduit to the hull for the transducer. But looking at your photos and your text saying two THROUGH HULL - I cannot see any tube ..

it’s Wednesday and a host of other issues . So bought me some mineral oil unscrewed the sensor and there is nowhere to put any oil. I’ve got this other sensor on the starboard side but am wary of trying to open it up ( if it’s even the depth sounder in the first place) can someone tell me which is which so I can at least know where to start please.

Can you give us a photo of each again - but taken horizontally ? basically because the IMG_8403 picture looks strange ....

Other poster was able to post a NASA Depth transducer because you specified such an item ... he did not post based on the earlier text of your post ...

I've attached a Clipper Duet Nasa manual ... does not matter its a duet display - the point is - it will have the mounting variants for transducers in it so you can then look at yours and it will help you to not make a mistake !! Holes in boats are not forgiving items !!

An over zealous friend was doing come during for me a while ago and held up the cable with the nylon nut part in his hand. I just realised he has snapped the transducer where it comes through the hull. Do I doubt it will work now anyway but more important it could let wateri in

Was this the depth transducer and he'd pulled it out of its tube ? Was it really through hull ? Can you post a picture of the item as it is now ? As the two pictures you showed earlier do not IMHO show a broken tranducer ...

Thanks, when your floaty thing is bobbing about on the runny stuff and something that prevents the runny stuff getting inside the floaty thing suddenly comes away in your hand, there instantly rises an element of the panic juice. If one then rushes to the Googlesphere in search of knowledge it is both tiresome and disquieting when one’s search h for knowledge is met with unhelpful

Thank you for your comprehensive posting, it along with others have allowed me to understand exactly what I have fitted and what I need to do to sort the problem. When a Newbie suddenly finds a component part of whoes function its to keep the runny stuff outside of the floaty thing comes away in his hand. It is understandable that a certain amount of panic ensues. When said Newbie then rushes to the Googlesphere in search of urgent advice., it is unhelpful when that request is met with sarcasm and unhelpness. In response to my badly composed text, some yourself included were still able to prided helpful advice while others chose to take the opportunity to be unhelpful and sarcastic. I thank you for your comprehensive posting. With the assistance of those willing to help a newbie rather than show just how much more than him they know, I have determined exactly what I have going on here and how I can fix it both immediately to keep said runny stuff outside where it should be and what I need to plan for when we haul

If you had stated you didn't know "which connection, can someone post an image of...", then yes.
However, Paul was clearly joking, appropriately too. Strange how you could read his post, but couldn't see the smiley - the big yellow round thing at the end of the sentence.

If you had stated you didn't know "which connection, can someone post an image of...", then yes.
