I remember seeing something advertised a while back - it's a fender-type thing that sits under the transom counter to stop waves thumping the underside at night - any ideas please?!

Yes an inflatable fender called The Wave Muffler made or sold by Fair Clip Yachting which I can find no trace of on 'Google'. I have one in new condition if you are interested.

It attaches in a similar manner to fenders so must be pretty universal, there are a row of eyes to thread cord through. Its orange in colour. When deflated stows away very small. PM me if you are still interested.

Most seaside shops sell foam plastic swimming / flotation aids like a long tube. I think if you tie three or four of those together to get a bigger diameter, and tie them under the transom they will do the same job, for very little cost.

I have one marketed by Navimo/Plastimo called the Sleeper. You can select one model from 3 to fit the beam of your boat. It is well made and professionally finished and packaged. Suspended from the inflatable tube is a mesh type material of about 6 inches in depth and this hangs down, weighted by what I suspect is lead shot or something similar. I guess this adds to the dampening effect. It is easy to inflate and deflate and store. After I have used it I suspend it from the guard rails for about 10 mins to let it dry off before I roll it up to store it in the bag provided. It definitely works on my Beneteau 331. However, it seems to work better in the marina than it does when at anchor or mooring buoy. Hope this helps.

Its a pity you did not post this earlier.
At the end of the summer visit a cheap shop like the range and buy the £3 paddling pools. The bigger the better. Cut the base off and you have a large inflatable ring,two or more around the transom work a treat. An additional bonus is they take up very littke room.
The boat Compass used on the advert is the same as mine , in rough conditions the slapping is audable from the shore fittting the collar makes sleeping in the stern cabin possible .
