France divides boats in sailing categories, 1st being being able to sail at whatever distance from the coast, 5th (maybe there is a 6th as weell) when you must stay within a few hundred meters from the shore. Belonging to one category means mainly that you must have the relevant safety equipment on board.
The rest runs: full batten mainsail, profurl headsail furling system, removable inner forestay, racing fittings, spinnaker fittings plus pole, two bladed folding propeller, 12v fridge, shore power and 12A battery charger, safety equipment (don t know why here it becomes 4th category...), anchors, tridata instruments -depth sounder, temperature, wind angle, wind speeed-, dodger new 2001, two portholes in...I miss the word, well the area inside the boat where the table usually is, where you sit to have a drink..

FYI The French are very in to their CATs As stated before CAT1 goes anywhere CAT6 goes not very far. The translations look OK to me (I live in Granville Normandy but my French is not so good!) You may wonder why the boat is CAT3 but the safety equipment is CAT4. Insurance is based on the equipment not the boat. Why pay for equipment and insurance for a CAT3 when you only wish to sail in CAT4 waters? If you were to buy the boat you could upgrade it to CAT3. If you buy a CAT4 boat it cannot be made into a CAT3.

I looked it up, the French Navigation categories are
1. No limits from the shore
2.Less than 200nm from the shore
3.Less than 60nm
4.Less than 20
5.Less than 5
6.Less than 2nm
"The shore" is a shelter, a place where both the boat and the crew can be put out of danger. Ie a 4category may not be allowed to cruise at 5nm along a shore with no ports...

Since 1996 there are the European "Conception categories" A B C D.

A boat in Category A can sail in categories 1 to 6.
A Cat. B boat in categories 2 to 6.
a C boat in categories 4,5,6
