hi, was wondering if any solo sailors out there had any experience of transiting the canal and metods they used, iv heard about the requirement for 100ft lines and four rope handlers, also heard about going piggy back on a steamer! anyone got any ideas?

Yes you need four line handlers (and strong cleats), if you don't have the lines you can hire them. They normally try to raft yachts together but it's pot luck what you go through with. Most people go as line handlers on another yacht before going through themselves. In peak periods you may have to wait a few weeks, so don't arrive there 'late'. Not sure what else you want to know?

Many thanks, i have a rustler 31 and have been toying with the idea of either transiting the canal or sailing my easting down from Cape Town to achieve my dream of reaching the pacific!!

Have a look at my web site and go to Panama Canal - all the details there... Pretty straight forward once you have been measured and paid - not cheap! Line handlers and warps generally no problem - anyway have a look and then email me if you want more info - address on here or my site.
