I have Mr Bellfields Tide plotter on my PC, paid for and downloaded.
I want to get it onto my laptop which is not linked to the PC.
I thought that I could just copy the prog onto a disc and from that onto the laptop hard drive.
It seems that I can only copy the shortcut but not the program.
Mr Bellfield told me some time ago that there should be no problem so is this just a grey cell failure?
Help please!!

Find the folder that the shortcut points to and then copy the entire folder to the laptop.... once you have it there, find the exe file for the program in the folder and create a shortcut which you can then copy wherever you want it....

Be warned - when you installed the program on your PC it may also have copied other files to the registry and such-like, so the program may not work on your laptop by just copying the directory - in which case you need to go back to the supplier and ask how you do it....

Not sure if this will help but here goes.

Some time ago I had the Bellfield on CD-ROM and I wanted to move it from a PC to a laptop. Firstly I had to tell the programme that I was going to delete it/make it inoperative on the PC and it generated a code that I had to use when I reinstalled it on the laptop. Obviously I did this from the CD-ROM.

Is it possible that you have to do something similar in that you get a transfer code by deleting it/make it inoperative which you can then use at no extra cost when you download a new copy of the programme to your laptop.

Possibly worth an email or phone to Bellfield.

Take no notice of copying stuff from your hard drive, it doesnt work like that, stuff in the registry doesnt come over. Start by going to the website, download the prog then use the code and user namer you used on the first pooter to re register it on the new pooter.
Ive done it several times as I changed pooters.

You still running DOS?

I (and my colleagues) create programs that sell for many thousands of dollars, do very complicated things, and work on computers from Windows PCs to large Unix servers to million-dollar mainframes. Yet the last three I worked on could all have been copied from machine to machine like Nigel describes.

There are also plenty that can't, of course.

A long way from my boat! :(
www.umfundi.com
and to answer the actual question ....

Right click on the shortcut to the program on the PC.
click on properties
A dialog will pop up with the details of the program
nav to tab - shortcut
look for the box titled Target:
that's where the program is parked on your hard drive.

Plug in a USB memory stick

create a directory on the stick called 'tides', move in to it - leave that window open.

Open up explorer and navigate to the target directory on the PC.

Highlight everything in the PC directory ( ctl A ) and drag it in to the directory on the usb stick.

Eject and plug the usb stick into the lappy.

Copy the tides directory to C:

nav into C:\tides

find the exe file that runs the tides program, right click on it and drag to the desktop. Click on 'create shortcut here'

if that doesn't work come back and ask again for a little more help, if it does, have a beer and contemplate how even a simple request on the forum can start a fight :)

Thanks all, here is what Mr belfield said.

No problem with copying across, download straight onto a CD or if you are copying across hold down the Ctrl key, this should avoid just providing a link. If you are still struggling send me you address and I will put a CD in the post.

I will attempt Mr nimbusgb's method when I have read it about 4 times!
Mr Belfield seems to be saying that I should do a new download only straight to a CD rather than onto my PC. I will investigate that method also.
Was there a fight then? I thought just a bit of banter!
Thanks everyone

Further to the last!!
Tried nibusqgb's method and it worked.....almost I could not find anexe file in any of those indicated under 'target' . When I tried to run the prog it asked me for my code ( the one I used for the orginal download to be approved. I dont have it now!!
I have gone back to Mr Belfield!!
His literature states that the program is licencesd for 2 machines but elsewhere it says one only so possible there is some crafty 'lock' on the number of copies allowed?
Thanks again

You may not see the exe part of a filename if you have extensions hidden in your display (Folder menu, Tools, Folder options, view,"hide extensions for known filetypes" tickbox).

The "crafty bit" is the registry bit retaining the authorisation code that someone said early on would be missing by copying it like this, and then the arguments started!
You should install it from the PC with the code mr belfield provided, failing that ask him (as you have done), not transfer it from the PC its already installed on.
