Hi all!

I recently got lucky on eBay and picked up a Raymarine MFD with a transom-mount CHIRP transducer... Well, I have a Rival 32 sailboat, and not much of a transom to hang it off...

I'm planning on installing a DST800 triducer though the hull, but it seems a shame not to use the CHIRP as well.

I was thinking of mounting it in some sort of temporary way off the bow of the boat so it could be used either as a fish-finder or an early-warning when you are about to run aground or hit a reef... Imaging a broom shoved into the bow anchor roller, with the transducer lashed to the other-end and submerged a few feet in front of the boat.... ;o)

Any thought or suggestions?

Cheers!

You can install a transom mount transducer as a shoot through hull. Not sure how you’d plan to connect both to the mfd though. And if the Raymarine is anything like my Simrad you have to delve deep into the menu to change the transducer feed.

I have been doing some amateur surveys for a while and a nice chap kindly gave me a spare fishfinder and transom transducer. To have a video of the sea bottom coordinated with the data for the survey has been very useful. I attached the transducer to a strong ally pole 2.5 inch diameter and had it lashed midships. It works great up to about 4kts; faster it loses data - simply because the transducer cause sufficient drag to result in slight vibration from the ally pole (the pole adding the drag as well). As I said it is great until over 4kts. On the bow I suspect it might have more vibration.

Thanks for the replies all!

Glenlivet - yep, Mersey was correct. 1x analogue, 1 x NMEA2k

Skipper_Christoph - As Mersey was thinking - this would be helpful when you are coming up on an anchorage or in a narrow channel going very slowly... I plan to do some single-handed sailing, and this would replace the watch on the bow.

Anyways - you have to love the internet - found a very reasonable Airmar P150M Chirp thru-hull transducer, so will scrap the DST800 and the Transom Chirp plans, and just go with a single thru-hull.

If anyone wants a Raymarine transom-mount CHIRP transducer - I have one going for a very reasonable price!!! ;o)

Yep - this is exactly what I had in mind! Thanks for the info on speed and vibrations - that hadn't crossed my mind!
