Non Boaty but perhaps of interest during the season..... I have been asked to help someone by finding out the best return UK train fare, on the net. I am told this area is a minefield; has anyone any tips that might help? The lady concerned is an OAP and could travel after 10 and before 4 on a day return basis. Thanks

And booking several days ahead makes big reductions in the cost. If you try and book on line you need to collect the ticket from one of the main stations - not very convienent. However find out the details and times then quick trip to the local station and they will match those on line prices. Saved 2/3 rds on a trip down to Torquay last spring by booking ahead.

Try Q Jump. You can do it online, and the tickets can be sent first class post to you.

Depends on where you want to go, but First Great Western online also send you the tickets.

For example yesterday SHMBO travelled to Ipswich and back. This site (and National Rail) want to give us times etc via London Bridge and Stratford but she prefers to go via Liverpool Street not Stratford as the trains start there (and she knows her way round) and then to come back via Charing Cross rather than London Bridge because the trains start at Charing Cross.

I have not succeed in telling Qjump that that this what we want to do. Maybe its possible, we'll investigate further another time.

You can never win though. LBG to LST involves a change at Bank but yesterday they were advising passengers not to get off at Bank because the escalators were not working!

Never underestimate walking into a station and asking the ticket office staff. Twice now my local rail people have found us tickets which were less than I could find on the web - and no, they didn't just make a mistake! If I have time to plan ahead I always double check with them now.

If she is planning more than one journey over the next year, get her to buy a Senior Railcard, only £20 and it will save a fortune in fares, often half price or less. One the best investments I ever made.
