Has anyone else noticed the added cost of RYA instructor insurance this year and the fact that the major insurance companies want to charge a whole lot more for club insurances due to compensation lawyers driving it all up?

I believe that I'm right in saying that next year training school insurance (could) top 10K / year? Which would put one hell of a dent in sail/mobo training costs.

As an instructor, I for one would seriously look at whether I continued instructing? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

As a requirement of their RYA status, sailing schools must have insurance cover which includes the instructor cover.
However, should a 'negligence' claim be made by one of the highly paid from the City (who seem to be the majority learning around the Solent), who would any claims (for almost certainly v.high values) be the made against.
Many instructors, because of the low 'wages' paid, cannot afford or because of the difficulty in getting cover from underwriters, do not these days have any insurance other than the schools (particularly the part-timers).
With many schools also sailing fairly close to the financial winds, can they still afford proper cover, how is it checked/audited & what are the exclusions?
I doubt many instructors ask to see a copy before undertaking work.
A similar situation applies to skippered charters!
This is a grey area & a timebomb waiting to happen.

Why oh Why do we have to suffer the RYA They're getting more and more like the profiteering RAC / AA setups..
These two used actually be helpful to motorists but no longer, just sell sell sell..
The RYA was ok in the 50s and 60s but now they're just not interested in us and I'm out of them n their membership thing..
Specially when there are so many errors in their publications....
Rant Ends Night Night
Cheers Bob E..
