All,

Having purchased my boat in June 03, we spent the first available weekend doing our (me and the Mrs) RYA level 2. If we were going to be responsible for friends and family as well as oursleves at sea, I at least wanted to be sure we knew what we were doing - which IMHO should be compulsory!

Anyway, I would now like to further my training and begin to be a little more adventurous with my trips.. What would be a good next step to incorporate more navigational work. I also need to obtain my VHF qualification.

Thanks

Nick.

If you could fill in your profile a bit it would help ,
What type of boat do you have?
What area are you on the water.
We would need this infomation to answer your question for practical courses.

Do the Dayskipper theory. this will give you a lot of confidance in your navigational skills. then it may be a case of venturing a bit further each time you go out./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Nick,

I bought my first boat back in December of last year, a Fairline Targa 37. I decided that good training was a must, so did my insurance company who placed a condition on the insurance that I must hold Dayskipper qualification. I completed my Dayskipper training last week and also combined this with VHF and I.C.C.

After completing the training I could not contemplate going out without the basic skills that I was tought. I now have the qualification but lack the experience, which I will gain slowly throughout the comming year.

I was very lucky to find a fantastic training instructor who instructed me on my own boat. I cannot overstate how impressed I was and would not hesitate to recommend him. If you want his details please PM me. My advise is to continue with the training, I am now looking towards the Coastal Skipper qualification.

Rob

From this year, the RYA are introducing an intermediate course to the Powerboat structure. It was felt that the jump between Level 2 and advanced was to big. As you have just passed your Level 2, you need to gain more on water expereince. The Intermediate course will provide you with more practical training together with more advaced navigational skills and proper use of GPS and passgae planning. The Advanced PB level involves night work and you are expected to have knowledge to Day Skipper practical before enrolling for this course. I would suggest that in terms of more advanced boat handling you and look at doing the new intermediate course and then use the summer to hone your boating skills and experince; then look at doing the Day Skipper theory over the winter months, ready for the Advanced course next year. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
