Trailing Log Query

Father Christmas gave me a trailing log kind of widget which got me wondering, If you have a trailing log trundling along behind you how do you stop numpties like me from crossing your stern too close and picking it up on the keel?

You yell at them, and they usually smile and wave back. Or point at the stern and tell you that you've got a line trailing in the water. Fortunately most folk don't cross the stern that close, except racing dinghies and PWCs, and they don't have enough draught to hit the impeller unless they're really close.
