I am faced with taking my Osborne Swallow Senior out of the water and transporting to my barn for 1-2 years(!) work. The barn is too low for craning so am looking for a trailer for transport and storage (32'-5 tonnes). Would not matter if it needs work and would be grateful for any pointers to anything not too expensive.
Thanks

might be worth asking your local haulage co, or HGV garage/depot.

you're looking at at an old low loader. or agricultural trailer, you can pick these up relatively cheaply. for road use they should really be plated (like mot) but i'm sure you'd be able to find someone who would haul it with trade plates just to get you sorted.

just a thought... i'm looking for something to put my osborne kingswift on...

just in case!!

good luck, steve.

You are just about to try what I have just spent the last month hunting around for. My earlier qeustion about decks, was related. I am also trying to find or build a trailer to get my 33/8 tons into a barn. My experience so far.

First suggestion: Ex RAF bomb trolleys. I can't find one for love nor money, even though I have contacts in the RAF.
Second. Get a seond hand yard trolley. Typically very difficult to move, and then the only one I could find was 10k including the tractor, I didn't want.
Third. Get a dedicated trolley made. 3.8k + VAT. No thanks
Fourth: Get an old army or agricultural trailer. Possibility, but looking at 2k for one and they tend to have high (3-4 foot) beds which would give me, at least, height problems in the barn.
Five. Make my own from some lorry axles, steel, a friendly welder, and a boat cradle.

Five is looking like the best option. I have some truck axles, (£260), and should be able to get the rest of the steel cut and welded for about a grand. It is actually more than I had hoped to pay. If you don't need to move the boat except, in and out once, then you might be able to put the whole show on rollers. One of the haulage companies I spoke to, suggested scaffolding poles, but this very much depends on the barn and yard floor/ground.

If you would like to get in touch, we might be able to work out something that we could both use. I am Anglia based.

Thanks for your ideas. Option 5 looks good to me as well, if I can't find an old low loader. I need to transport about 20 miles-I already have an agricultural contractor lined up with a tractor. Will certainly bear you in mind although I'm down on the south coast.

Old low loader is best bet I think. I walked down the Frome just last week. Will keep an eye out for a fellow Osborne when next there!

I've no idea if this is feasible but could you not buy a cradle off an out-of-business boatyard, truck the boat in and winch it into the barn?
