Is there such a thing as a good-looking, traditional, sailing design which can be trailed and which has a pleasing interior for use on coastal hopping, and which can be found generally available second hand? Would ideally like to find something which also offers a degree of protection for sailing with young family (high cockpit coaming, senisble deck arrangement etc)

Cornish Shrimper?

I always fancied a Fairey Atalanta. Not exactly traditional but certainly a 50s classic. Very roomy 26ft, indestructible hot moulded ply, lifting keels, lovely.

Google the owners assoc.

So do I, but most definitely not indestructible. They are wooden boats, therefore need to constant maintenance. There are many good ones around, and they do come on the market from time to time.

BUT: so do many rats. The Lifting keel mechanism is fine if it works. If not its a nightmare. Once rot gets in to that cold moulded hull - and the worst weak point is the stressed area round the lfting keels - then repairs are costly, difficult, and require advanced skills and techniques to be effective.

Lovely boats though, and if you can find a good one, you wont regret it.
