We had planned to take our trail boat to Cornwall for a week in August. Thanks to our current weather, wifey is starting to make 'over my dead body noises' (which could be arranged if really needed /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

We have trailed to the Med several times but with only a week available its a bit too far. Has any one got any suggestions for places to take the boat within 3 or 4 hours of Calais?

I did something similiar when we were looking at France.. There are a couple of inshore huge lakes on the west coast of France sort of opposite to Bordeaux near Archachon. The firs lake is here, nice sandy beaches, great area, and the day fee was not a huge amnount of money. There is a marina on the top right hand side and down the southern end. No speed limits and ski areas. We hired a boat for the day and there are lots of shallow areas to picnic and swim. look here http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=45.141383&lon=-1.075006&z=12.1&r=0&src=ggl

This is the second lake - again nice, I think better than the previous one for boating, they have campsites and a well specced marina in the bottom right hand side. Again day tickets available, and again we hired a bayliner for a couple of hours. I preffered this lake to the other one.

Finally the bay of Archachon, when the tide is in its pretty huge, and you can get out to sea and moor up in some of the sandy dune areas just outside the bay.
I did have all the prices etc and contacts for this, I posted them about 2 years ago on this forum, I probably have the images still at home if you want more details.
This is Archachon..

Hope that helps - La Rochelle is nice and the areas around teh Islands, but we only stopped for a couple of days. It is more open to teh elements, so I am not sure if it would suit the boating you want? I am sure someone will correct me!

Hope this helps

Sorry I posted reply on wrong thread!
The Morbihan in Southern Brittanny is a great place for trailered boats excellent facilties at Port Crousty. If the weather is settled you can also get out to the islands in the bay.
On my 3x2 weeks visits always August found the weather no better than Cornwall. You really need to get alot further south for better weather.
Agree on Arcachon good but lakes are small but with sandy beaches

Thanks for the help, I like the look of the lakes and the Morbihan area. We enjoy cruising, but boats under 20ft so we need settled weather -these places will probably give us more chance to get out in our time window.

Whilst both St Malo and Morbihan are favourites, if its bit windy then the River Rance worth a trip up the river from St Malo.

How about Lake Annecy, hotels with moorings aswell as marinas. High chance of good weather in August with 24 deg C fresh water to swim in!

We are off to the lakes south of the Arcachon basin on Friday. We have booked into Port Navarrosse for 2 weeks. Not easy to get info about the region or get booked in but really looking forward to bring there now and hopefully some sunshine. We had a 2 week holiday in La Rochelle and River Charente last year. Really enjoyed it and also explored Ile D'Re, went inland when weather changed. Found it quite exposed for our 23/24 foot trail boats so hoping the lakes will be a bit calmer this year. Roll on Friday !!!
