It already seems a long time ago, but we spent the last two weeks of June whizzing around the Golfe de St Tropez in glorious sunshine from our rented Port Grimaud base. I thought I would share a few details and photos of our trip for those who are interested and may be thinking of doing similar trips themselves.
Whist there was sunshine a plenty there was also a lot of wind, even by Med standards with most days blowing force five with higher gusts and several days of sevens gusting eights often with no respite even at night. This meant that we were confined for the most part to the Golfe de St Tropez itself where shelter was to be found. However as we had cruised the region before, and the main objective of this holiday was to relax, we were not too disappointed.
Anyway, the piccies!
Starting with how we got there and back:
Portsmouth \ Le Harve night crossing followed by two days drive, stopping at Valance on way out, Chalon on return.

And where we stayed:

A couple of pics of PG itself:

A few anchorages where we sheltered and generally passed the time of day:

We visited St Tropez twice, being offered a free mooring both times for a few hours by asking at the capitanarie. To stay longer and make an evening of it we took an overnight berth, even though we left for PG at 2:00 am.
St Tropez from the sea:

and from within the harbour, the first showing one of our short visit berths on the superyacht quay :

A calm day in the Golfe! The cloud is actually a brush fire in the hills.

And St Maxime where a similar short term free berth was made available whilst we explored the town.

Part two of the post will feature some of the boats that caught my eye whilst we were there.

Eva was on pampelonne last saturday and in the V.I.P room in St Tropez on Sunday night, photos were a no go apparently. Still made a big spread on the Var Matin front page!.

Great pics, dbp. If it's any consolation weatherwise, the last time that we berthed in PG was June 2003 when we experienced an unforecast easterly gale of such ferocity that it ripped our VHF aerials clean off the boat

No, I dont think that S Trop has a railway station. I think you'd have to get a train from Nice to S Raphael, which is about 40km from S Trop, and either get a bus or taxi from there. Beware of taxis though. We found them v expensive in SoF. Maybe another option is to rent a car

I belive that there is a ferry to St Trop from Nice. Check your road maps they usually indicate ferry routes. There is defnintely one from cannes to St trop and it is by far the easiest way to get there in the summer by avoiding the queing traffic.

I suppose there's always the helicopter service from Nice airport /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You can get the train from Nice to Saint Raphael and then the ferry on to St Tropez, i think they depart from the old port rather than Port Santa Lucia.

That'll be a lot better as I'm sure that either jfm or tcm will happily lend you their boats which are moored in Antibes. In fact you could be in San Trop in a couple of hours. I would drop them a PM /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Quickest way is to take the 'Fast Ferry' from Cannes , having got there by train from the airport as wakeup says .... 800 yards from train station to ferry port min but fastest way. St Raph ferries are slow ...

Timing needs to be carefully worked through whichever way.

Take a car and you'll have to turn back before St Trop due to never-ending queues ... how not to enjoy the South of France.
