can anyone tell me of good books or other sources of information on the making of traditional wooden blocks? I would also like to know where I can buy the sheaves, pins and other fittings, and a good source of ash or other suitable timber would be useful! Thanks.

There's a chap called Colin Frant (I think that's his name) at Standard Quay, Faversham, who makes complete blocks. He might be able to help. Sorry I can't supply contact info. The Thames Barge fraternity would know who and where.

You could try one of our local firms in Woodbridge, Classic Marine, who do custom work for traditional boats. Their website also helpfully lists books on related subjects - http://www.classicmarine.co.uk/

I don't have any direct experience of their services, however, as having an ancient timber house to maintain I can't face maintaining an ancient timber boat as well...

The Fisherman’s co-operative next to the hypermarket in Cherbourg sells them.
Not very helpful to you unless you get to Cherbourg /forums/images/icons/blush.gif

I think that you'll find that the traditional timber to use is Elm. (Elm is very resistant to splitting because it doesn't have a "straight" grain)

Good start.

Wooden Boat magazine has publ;ished articles from time to time; see also The Arts of The Sailor by Hervey Garrett Smith for some starter designs.

Having an ancient wooden boat to maintain, I live in a modern box!
