TRACY\'S TRIPS HAVE ENDED WITH VOLVO PENTA D3

Hi

I’m new here – so I hope I am in the right place. I own a small motorboat. Three years ago I had a new Volvo Penta engine fitted – the turbo diesel D3-160 with the SX outdrive leg, by a main dealer, there were a few minor problems to begin with but 6 months after it was launched it was noticed that there were more significant problems and it has been stored ashore ever since. Have you experienced, or have any experience of problems with this engine/outdrive unit.

Shamby has exactly that combo, and it performs just fine, albeit on the Thames.

Are your problems at speed? Somebody mentioned something about that.....

Hi Guys

Thank you for your response. The problems appear to be with the external stainless steel grease nipples and the transom shield which are suffering from corrosion within just six months from the launch. My boat would normally be berthed on the South Coast (sea water not fresh) There is also concern that integral parts that can't be seen may have similar corrosion. Have you suffered from similar symptons with this engine?

See last months mby titled d 3 woes, there have been endless problems with this model, they are simply not an engine that is suitable for slow speed river use as the variable vane turbo seizes up due to soot from the engine, also the wastgate seizes too.
Sealine dont seem to wire them up correctly either and edc faults occur, then you cant find the ecu as they seem to hide them behind dash panels that dont come out!, then they dont want to pay the warranty either, they then connect into engine looms for radars and other things which sends the units haywire. Good old sealine eh?

Hi, thank you for your answer. I’ve not been able to find a copy of last months mby, do you know if there is a link to this article. I’d appreciate it very much.
I have heard of problems with this engine, which are the same as mine as well as other problems which you speak of. I have only done a total of 20 hours running on the clock – two of which were the return journey to my home port and three hours use when I loaned my boat as a demonstrator to the main dealer who installed the engine, asking if he could show prospective purchasers of this engine. I didn't charge him for this nor did he offer to pay for the diesel.

After only 6 months in commission and 20 hours use I found problems with the potentiometer and that the grease nipples had completely fizzed away along with a few ancilliary fixings and the transom shield was completely bare of its protective paint from manufacture and is extremely and heavily pitted all over. My boat is protected by all the correct and necessary cathodic protection. At first the dealer’s MD saw this in situe in the river and requested an immediate lift hold and return to repair it after the boat had been removed he realized he couldn’t do effective corrective work whilst held and insisted it be chocked and stored until he could resolve the problem, this was two and a half years ago. He did start paying the storage fees to begin with but then refused to pay for anything and has walked away, saying he doesn’t know what the answer is.

I would appreciate it very much if you could give me your views on this and advice on any action you think I can take or any information regarding this unit.

The nipple and corrosion problem is obviously electrolosis which was caused by either the wrong anodes fitted to either the drive or the hull if it has one, you have not told me what make of boat it is either grp or metal etc. Would still persue your claim as if it gets worse you may need a new transom shield. No link to mag it was not that in depth but covered some issues with the d 3 that are now common knowledge especially on this forum!.
