I was recently told that a very beautiful pilot cutter, Marianne, under restoration at Gweek, might have been one I owned from 1960 - 65, during which time I struggled to restore her from a wreck. Mine was called Colaba but that name was given her in the 1920s when she was converted to a yacht. We sailed her, but we ran out of bank managers. The Gweek boat is right in many ways, has the same builder and the year of build, 1889, is correct - the dimensions as far as my memory permits, also seem correct. However, the history the new - and wonderful - rebuilders have is different from that I knew My wife recalls reading of a sister ship. I do not.

I know she was registered in Lloyds Yacht Register in the mid 50s, but have failed to find a way to access archive copies of that publication. Can anyone help me get into that archive?

Thanks,

Will Taylor

She is registered in a 1949 Register of Yachts as Official Number 1229, built 1889 in Cardiff. If you send me your e-mail address, I will get my scanner working and send you a copy of the page. Alternatively, if you need any particular information now, please just ask.

It is she

Now owned by Dominic Ziegler, the Financial Editor of the "Economist"; indeed Dominic has owned her for some time, and finally decided to go for the big rebuild. He also edits a newsletter called "The Wave" which is the newsletter of the Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter Owners Association.

Like the other Hambly skiffs that I have seen, she is prettier than the average Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter.
