Tracey Edwards

I remember following Maiden in my 13ft tinny in NZ.
It was the start of the 1990 Whitbread RTW race. it was all going well until 5000 other boats started their engines, it was like being in a washing machine, good job we had a big bucket. I became an admirer of Tracy Edwards, but forumites seem to have quite a dim view of her, which may, or may not be justified.

Talking of Tracey Edwards reminded me that SWMBO and I saw 'Maiden' on the hard at Swanick Marina (aka Moody's) at the weekend...

High view of her sailing abilities and exploits

Low view of her business acumen

I think the jury's out on that one. I read her book about the Whitbread and was amazed to come across two statements...

All waves travel at 22 knots.

The pressure of wind on the sails makes the boat turn up into the wind and the rudder counteracts that. The combination of the two forces makes the boat go forwards like squeezing an orange pip.

I've only met two "profile" women sailors.
Clare Francis and Tracey Edwards.
Miss Francis is a really nice person whose record speaks for itself.
I have no comment to make on Miss Edwards which would allow publication on a public forum.

I did think JH gave her too easy a ride.

I had a low opinion of TE prior to the broadcast but have to say this increased a notch or two after. Maybe I have an natural empathy for the Welsh.

JH takes a soft approach in this program series compared to his Today appearances.

Clair Frances is a woman from a different era, I doubt she could make an impression in today's pro sailing circuit competing against Tracy Edwards or Dame Ellen but I sure know who I would prefer to go for a day sail with.
