There is an O ring seal on the ram which can snag and become mangled, this defect may not show and your pilot starts quietly leaking.

I use silicone, a tiny amount a couple of times a season does the job.

At last a response... :) That's what I was thinking, thanks mate.

There is no need to lube it, the rod is immersed in hydraulic fluid when it is in the closed position, so why put grease on it? As it comes out of the tube the seals scrape the excess oil off.

Are you sure? No offence meant... Surely it's a mechanical threaded gear action to push and retract the ram.

Is there a requirement/recommendation to lube the ram periodically? Silicone lube for example?

What does the owners manual say ? ...... available on line if you have mislaid your copy!

Certainly no requirement or recommendation to lub the ram on my old Autohelm.

The manual says 'it will benefit from an application of silicone or Teflon grease once per season'. Have tomsay I have never lubricated my TP 30.

Sorry Vyv, I hadn't/haven't seen that... Trying to read the downloaded manual on this phone is a bit of a 'mare. Which is why I asked the question on here. Where does it say that?

Sorry Kev, assumed instead of looking. My auto helm is a hydraulic ram, yours is indeed a threaded thing. Do what Vyv does.
