.
My old TP10 has only worked satisfactorily under engine in flat calm conditions for some time, and even then has occasionally had problems.

Now I am going to be doing more singlehanding it is a concern, and I am thinking of replacing it. Is it worth paying the extra for the TP22 ? I need to be able to leave the TP steering while I go and reef etc.

(Boat is an Albin Vega 27')

TP22 every time. I always feel I need a TP32 rather than a 22 for my Sadler 290.

Depends on your ability to replace the current consumption and the conditions you expect it to work in.

There's hardly any difference in thrust between the TP10 and the TP22 (65kg vs 70kg). The extra cost of the TP22 is mainly down to the fact that it will interface with a GPS/plotter/etc. If you feel the TP10 isn't powerful enough, maybe you need a TP32, which has 85kg thrust, and a different mechanism.

Thanks.

It looks like I am looking for a new TP10 then.

I've had a TP20, purchased new, a TP30 purchased slightly used, and now I have a new TP32 for my 6.5 ton gaffer.
The first two gave good service but eventually died of electronics failures, beyond economic repair.
The 32 had a mechanical failure, repaired under warranty, after less than ten hours use but is much noisier and more 'sudden' in its action. I think I need to investigate the set-up options to minimise the noise.
All fit the same tiller pin and deck socket, although the electrical plug/socket is different on the 32.

I use Raymarine myself; though the Autohelm 1000 is perfectly adequate, I have found the 2000 much more capable in situations like significant quartering seas.

It often comes with a remote control thrown in but check you won't need to buy a box to connect it.

I'd guess that a Vega is not heavy to steer and that you dont need any extra thrust which the TP 22 may offer but it would be wise to look at the full specs and compare the speed, of operation . If the TP 22 is faster that may well be an advantage worth having.

Look also at the specs for the Raymarine equivalents. An improvement in performance may well be worth the effort of changing the mountings.

I did compare TP to Autohelm, my findings and reviews here convinced me to stay with Autohelm.

The 2000 has significantly more power and faster hardover times than the 1000; I could just about stop the 1000 with all my weight on it, but not the 2000 which seemed it was likely to lift me - as VicS says though it's not just power it's reaction time which makes life easier.

The TP10 and TP22 have the same hardover times, as said the main difference with TP22 is the ability to interface it.
