Towing Lamp Fuel

Re: Probably GC actually ... D86 ?

D86 - to determine the boiling range, not to look at the distillate fractions. We use D86 data as a useful characteristic of petroleum distillates. Once heavier than kero and in the gasoil range, the information in GC is really too much data - when the IBP, 5%,50%,95% and FBP will tell you a lot about the source. It will aslo give some indication of flash point, if you have not got a flash point apparatus available.

I would not use IR though - most light petroleum fractions would look too similar.

Re: Probably GC actually ...

We use B and Q Citronella oil in our parrafin lamps.Slight smell is much more pleasant than Parrafin.

Citronella ....

Most Citronella that is sold across counters is not the correct Citronella blend that Mossies don't like......... There is only one specific Citronella strain that works. And it's not cheap.

Most work actually by the smoke / fume that comes off ... the aroma kids the person that is there - you !

Don't believe me ? Google Citronella and also Mosquito ... If I find the link that put me onto it - I'll post it up ....

Re: Citronella ....

Has the Hurricane we just had reached the Baltic yet ?Or will it hopefully fizzle out by then.

try and find an old Tilley

[/ QUOTE ] went to their website recently to check on spare parts. I was amazed to find that new they now cost £89 or £99 depending upon exact model.

I needed a new "preheating torch" which we actually got from the local hardware centre. However it is not a clip on type but an annular reservoir, like those on Primus stoves but with a wick. and which has to be fitted permanently. A better idea in some respects but it could not be used with an "insect screen" and getting meths into it is a bit of a problem as there is not room below the glass to pour from a bottle. Any body know if they supply anything with a new lamp. The Hardware centre did not know the answer so until such time as I get round to contacting Tilley directly I have added a bit of plastic tube to a small hypodermic syringe (no needle) and will use that rather than lift the top and glass off eveytime.
