I want to tow a Macwester Rowan Crown about 20 miles home each winter and then back to the water each spring. I will get it craned on and off. Has anyone had experience of doing this? What sort/power of vehicle was used and what sort of trailer should I look for - presumably four wheeled and braked. Any advice would be most welcome.

I believe there was a chap called Simon Maclennan (or is it Maclellan?) who used to use this forum, I think he may have towed his Crown. They're pretty heavy boats I think, but should be doable.

We have a road trailer for our Vega (2.3t design weight) and have used a tractor to tow it, but in theory any of the biggest 4x4s would do the job- e.g. Defender, Disco, Range Rover, Landcruiser Amazon, Nissan Patrol, Trooper, and some variants of the Shogun. The Hilux or L200 are not as powerful as the above.

I used to do this with the same boat, but the distance was about 80 miles each way. I sold the boat last year and the new owner didn't require the trailer as he intended to keep the boat at a boatyard. Now be ready to kick yourself hard on the backside, I've just recently sold the trailer on ebay and in fact it gets picked up tomorrow! I had the trailer purposely built to fit a Rowan Crown and it cost about £2,000, as you say it had twin axles and was braked. I used a Ford Ranger to tow it, and it was lifted on and off using a cradle.

Yes it's MacLellan!

Thank you for the info, I was not even sure that they could be legally towed so that is really good news. What a pity for me you sold the trailer. I will just have to keep a look out.

Many thanks
