Toughened glass windows

Re: Toughened glass windows re dftn

They are now pretty much universally laminated because it is so much stronger

A common misconception but laminated float glass is not nearly as strong as toughened and auto glass is made from laminated float glass. If you remain unconvinced there are hundreds of references to it on the internet or else phone a glass manufacturer.

I would be amazed if you could find any authorative (eg from a glass manufacturer/supplier) reference that claims that laminated float glass (eg autoglass) is stronger than toughened of the same thickness. Following your post I have had a quick browse and all the manufacturers/suppliers I looked at disagree with you and typically quote 1/4 of the strength (depending on treatment).

Re: Toughened glass windows re dftn

Remember I referred to the "window as a whole"!

I don't doubt for one minute that the glass on either side of the interlayer might not be as strong as toughened glass - but does that matter when the overall item has better properties?

Thanks very much for the leads with regard to my 'Curved Toughened Glass' search. I'll give them a go, and let you know how I get on.
