Hi,

At some point in her history my UFO 34 had some coats of epoxy applied as either osmosis treatment or prevention. This year I have had a few things done to her hull (new p-bracket and moving a thru-hole) that has resulted in gel coat being exposed in a few small patches. The previous epoxy layer is black and I wondered if anyone can tell me what it is likely to be and where I can get a small quantity to perform a like-for-like touch-up ?

Thanks,

Boo2

Could be coal tar epoxy, which is always black. Relatively inexpensive, it is used as a barrier coat. Blue Water Marine makes one, and a quart won't set you back too much, although make sure you use whatever primer they recommend as well.

Yes, I agree with Delfin, coal tar epoxy sounds likely. Sold as VC-tar it was excellent stuff. Unfortunately its aromatic content infringed health and safety legislation and it has been heavily modified. Although still available some users seem to think it is not as effective as it was. For touch-up should be OK though.

As Vyv writes, VC-Tar was modified many years ago, to the extent that there is no longer any tar in it (as it says on can). But of course the OP probably won't know which formulation he has. That said, if it's abraded to a good key, any epoxy suitable for barrier coating should stick OK, whether 'new' VC-Tar of summat else.
