Which would provide for a less worrisome night at anchor? Forecast wind E4-5. Rising towards Springs.
Totland or Alum Bay overnight?

Personally I prefer Totland, it always seems a little more sheltered. You also have the benefit of the pub on shore which serves reasonable food and beer and you can walk to the village to pick up the Sunday Time 
Keep a close eye on the chart as you enter the bay, it's a little rocky.

Totland has a nice sandy bottom. There are quite a few patches of rock/weed. I tend to get in as close as I can to miss them.

Alum bay close in is clay with stones. I've dragged anchor here many times. Might be better further out but then you'll be in the wind so I've never tried.

My vote is for Alum - one of my favourite anchorages. Have anchored there dozens of times and never dragged there yet with Delta and before that a Danforth/Fob. Totland has never appealed to me, too open, to the extent that I have never stopped there overnight. If going to Alum must avoid Long Rock reef at eastern End - on Springs it often catches out the unwary.

Holding in Totland is excellent. Stay between the pier and the old boathouse to the west.
Excellent restaurant just around the corner in Colwell called Barefoot on the beach.

I would vote for Totty bay as well. Nice and sheltered well in. Always found good holding.

Expect to spend Fri night in Totland - will keep an eye out for you Goldie. We're a Vancouver 27 with a green stripe on the topstrake.

what sort of wind directions are suitable for these bays? Does much swell get in?

They are no fun if there is a north in the forecast.
They are best if there is a south on the forecast.
More swell in a westerly than an easterly.
