As a result of my children listening to 'my' records I was asked what Don Maclean's American Pie was about. Found <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.writeforweb.com/twister1>Let's Twist Again
Thanks for that, Ken - "AP" has always been a great favourite of mine and over the years I have heard any number of (usually conflicting) interpretations of the song. This is the most comprehensive and well-researched attempt I have seen yet and confirms McLeans status as one of the great songwriters of the 20th C.
Quite interesting at that length, but disconcerting to hear that..."figuring out the 'real meaning' of the song.....certainly the life's work of many talented scholars," (Er, trust me, I'm a doctor....) especially in the light of American Pie being "an eschatological parable of nuclear destruction, and the rebirth of civilisation on Alpha Centauri."
Though I rather liked the reference to..."Je suis Marxiste, tendance Groucho," (I'm a Marxist of the Groucho variety). Anyway I'm off to do a PhD on "Saturday Night's All Right for Fightin'...."

If they have heard the Don MacLean version they'll never again listen to Madonna's act of sacrilege (Ali G in the video or not)
BTW Can anyone name a cover of a 60's/ 70's song that is as good as the original?
Yes, he's alive & kicking aged 58 - he's doing a live concert at Gulfstream Park, Florida on 21 Feb 04. Never did anything alse to equal American Pie & Vincent, though.
