Hi,
Yesterday must have been my second worst boating experience ever par a cruise ship getting very close to tipping in the Messina Straights! I decided to buy a Glastron Spirit V-165 from a marina about 30 miles up the river from me for the princely sum of £1825 which considering the fiberglass was emaculate and engine was a 1990 60hp johnson that sounded like a four stroke was a bargain. Anyway we set off at around 12pm with a grey sky but one of those days you don't expect it to rain. Two hours later and we were back in our marina(of course I wasn't speeding!) There was plenty of interest from the fellow boaters as it looks like a classic glastron and the lines are beautiful. Eventually I and one other speedboat enthusiast decided to take them up the river for a "high speed trial" which involves one lock to get to our playground.
This is where the problem came. As we left the marina it started to spit, and as we arrived at the lock it appeared our boats would have been better in the sky than on water it was that bad. Now being an open top sportsboat it had a tarpaulin to drape over it, unfortunately unbeknown to me this tarpaulin was so knackered that it had holes all across it literally inches apart. So theres me in the middle of the worst downpour you could imagine trying to hold this tarpaulin up from inside whilst having a nice free shower. Eventually I gave up and went to my friends boat which was a Plancraft Seaflite with a canopy, however the rain was so bad that it was coming through joints in his as well. So we waited around for an hour and a half until it appeared to stop and decided we would head back. Only as soon as the cover was off and I had set off it started to absouloutly bucket it down. By the time I got back to the marina I would have been better in the river. It was quite surprising as well that all those boats you never see used the owners appeared for a one time only viewing!!! Just to check their waste of money isn't getting wet!
I have a Fletcher Vigo as well which was probably one of the dryest boats in the marina, WHY I wasn't already satisfied with that I don't know but unless you live abroad sportsboats are pants!!!!
anyone else experience the rain?
