Hi All,

Sure many of you have been doing jobs, one I tackled was fitting a new selector lever on my 2005 tohatsu 3.5 two stroke, same as mariner and others(?) which required the top part / power unit to be removed from the leg. 6 m6 bolts.

As it says in the title anybody know what torque setting to do these up to?

I have ordered a head gasket and thought I might pop that off and clean the water ways whilst at it and would need the torque setting for them as well?

Also when putting the paper gasket on would people use hylomar blue or hermatite golden? Ideally I guess none but don't want to risk leaks in to the cylinder.

Thanks in advance.

When doing my Tohatsu 9.8 the advice about torque settings I received online was delivered authoritatively and turned out to be quite false.

I would contact by email: parts at tohatsu-uk.net - Will there is very helpful

The gasket for my model is metal with a thin rubber coating and most people seem to recommend against using hylomar on it.

I would have expected then to be given in the Service manual http://www.tohatsu.dk/forhandler/Service/Service Manual_1-2 Cylinder 2-Stroke.pdf but I'm darned if I can find them

The Merc/ Mariner 3.5 was a total different animal but 'Id expect the torques to be the same as for the Merc/ Mariner 3.3
Viz 9.6 Nm for the cylinder head and 5.6 Nm for the powerhead to mid section
See page 6-74 et seq here Boatinfo - 2001-2005 Mercury Service manual

What "paper gasket" are you referring too

Thanks for the replies. VicS there is a paper gasket between the power unit and the leg, well i assume it is paper!

The Mercury and Mariner parts lists show what compounds ( grease, jointing compounds, thereadlockkers etc ) should be used during reassembly. They don't show anything for this joint, but the do show Loctite 271 ( Red, medium strength thread-locker) for the exhaust housing to power-head bolts .

I expect many people would put a smear of grease on the gasket, rightly or wrongly.
