Hi,

My local chandler (in WestOz) is selling these Charge Distributers, but I cant find anything about them on the Web and I'm uncertain how effective they are.

Has anyone heard of them?

In the prod desc they state:

"After the engine has started and the generator (I assume they mean alternator) charges, the charge distributer connects the two circuits (house and engine) and governs the charging in order to give the most efficient charge to all batteries. When the engine stops the system automatically separates the house and engine banks."

I've translated this little but thats the essence.

Appreciate any advice

Regards

Hello Tony as suggested I think it is a Voltage Sensitive Relay which in my opinion is a good way to go. I notice Bias have a BEP VSR for $124
(thats 50 squid to my antipodes friends).
Where is the Tor available and how much?

Hi Will,

I found them in the bargain bin at YachtGrot for $50 a piece. Trevor has several of them but the staff I spoke to did'nt know much about them and I can find nothing on the web.

They sound exactly as I want but I'm curious why I cant find any info. The glossy brochure in the plastic bag gave the Swedish address and phone number but no emails or websites which suggests they are old stock from somewhere (everyone has an email today - dont they?)

I was thinking of taking a chance on them given the price but I'm concerned about damage to the alternator which is relatively new.

If it's the one in this pic, it looks a bit lightweight. I'd go for a BEP VSR instead.

Yes that's it. Does size matter (thats an invitation if there was one!)? or is the the wire sizes the issue (they are 6mm sq)?
Physically the BEP does not appear any bigger, (its 100X84X41mm. Weight 500g)

Where did you get the picture?

[/ QUOTE ]6 sq mm wire is rather small. I think the BEP product is likely to be much more satisfactory in the long-term.

I found the pic via Google.

At $50 that is a a bargain. The data should indicate the current capability.
Much might depend on the size of your domestic battery and the state of discharge. I would imagine that at fairly low engine revs the initial charge current might not exceed 20 amps. Assuming you don't have a smart charge controller or huge domestic battery.

A VSR can also be used to switch on a steaming light automatically wire between the nav light and mast light so mast light only lights when engine is running. Or can be used to switch on a fridge only when battery is being charged.

I wonder what our UK friends think of our favourite chandler being called "Yacht Grot"? Regards olewill

Hi Will,

I'm going down tomorrow to collect some rigging (inner forestay) and I'll take another look.

The only other opinion is that I'd be better off with the BEP. Any way I'll try and extract more info from Trevor.

My batteries are in good condition but I am about to extend the house batteries by installing two 100 amp AGM batteries in parllel. This may task the wires somewhat!
