I need to paint the transom on my grp boat and possibly the whole hull above the waterline.

Toplac and Brightside seem to be the ones recommended for amateurs anyone know which is preferable for a 22 foot yacht kept on a mooring.

Also any painting tips appreciated.

PS Totally p122ed off at the mo after a week off hoping for some end of season sailing.I guess I should be thankfull that the boat is still in one piece ,not everyone has been as lucky this week.

I use Toplac on Evadne's topsides, I haven't tried Brightside. I use no special preparation, just clean, degrease, sand lightly then pick a warm day with no rain. The last is the most difficult. I usually try and put two coats on but the single topcoat I put on 2 1/2 years ago is still looking ok. It eventually gets stained by the mud or terminally scuffed, after 5+ years, but then all it takes is another coat.

I have used Brightside on my washboards, good results.
More importantly we restored the GRP dinghy which is dragged her and there on its bottom, and painted it in Brightside. It is hanging on with remarkable veracity.

It aint cheap though.
There is a family with a 30 footer in our yard who paints his GRP boat with ordinary B&Q gloss in a quaint shade of blue violet. It seems to stay on, and he rubs down bits each year and just touches it up. Quite remarkable, and very very cheap. He has done this for years.

I.ve used Toplac on a 20' boat - works well, follow thw instructions carefully and you'll be OK. Don't try and change the colour too much as it will show. I painted blue onto blue and it was fine.

I used Toplac on a previously painted hull after some pretty extensive repairs to collision damage (it wasn't my boat at the time and I wasn't driving).
One coat of undercoat - dark blue - and 1 coat of black applied with a roller was so good that the 26 ft Centaur next door decided to paint his 'cos it looked so dowdy in comparison.
Best to apply in early morning if sunshine is expected as hull gets so hot it makes it difficult to apply. That's the penalty of having a black hull! The bonus is the gloss is terrific - and very few other are painted black - it seems to make it look bigger

Good luck

Graham, worth trying to get hold of some Jenny brushes (shaped Foam with sticks in for handles) they are not very Expensive & produce a superb result paticularly with Toplac (ends up looking like a spray job) Don't forget to degrease and key hull before you start...regards Tony W.

I used toplac - white onto white. It's not too much trouble on a 26' like mine to rub down with wet or dry - I think I got as far as 400 grade. I managed by myself - rolled the stuff on then tipped it off witha decent hamiltons perfection brush. Would be easier with two, one rolling, one following after with brush, to keep a wet edge. Haven't tried a jenny brush but might do next time.
Too early inthe morning and there might be dew on the hull. A wipe with a rag moistened with meths absorbs any damp.
best wishes...spuddy

I've got the same job to do before re-launching and I recently bought a couple of tins of Toplac at a boat jumble. What's the best stuff to use for de-greasing?

Hi graham, we changed the colour on our boat which was, all in all, a bit of a restoration project.
Once the damage to the hull had been repaired, we went for a change of colour from blue to white. Toplac was used on the the hull and Brightsides for the coachroof and we have also used Interdeck for the non-slip areas.
The topsides were prepared by rubbing down with various grades of wet & dry and a paint test carried out to ensure that it was in fact a single pack paint that was required. 3 coats of PreKote were used to prime using small foam rollers. You have to repeatedly roll until the tiny bubbles are rolled out. Wet and dry was used beween each coat. 2 topcoats of Toplac were then applied, again with foam rollers and a rub down between. As the final coat was being applied, swmbo followed behind using a fine mohair paintpad from top to bottom to remove any roller marks. This worked very well for us. SWMBO did most of the painting and found PreKote & Toplac a joy to use. Also need International no.1 thinners, I think it was.
Boat was then polished after 3 weeks using International polish with Teflon, and sealed using International sealer with Teflon, that was 2 years ago.
Results can be seen <A target="_blank" HREF=http://arweb.co.uk/argallery/h00>here.</A>
Boat was out this year for a small topsides repair and when this was carried out, after first removing the polish with Farclas rubbing fine compound, another coat of Toplac was applied.
After painting coachroof with Brightsides, swmbo reckoned the Toplac was better to use and preffered the finish I think.
Hope this helps.
