What is the max weight of a man to use the topclimber?
What is the safest knot to join the static line to an halyard?

Given the nature of a topclimber (a couple of jammers, one with seat, threaded onto a 10mm rope) I'm not sure that there is an upper limit other than the power of the climbers thighs to drive him/her up/down the rope (I weigh in at 17 stone if that helps). The 10mm rope will have a breaking strain well in excess of the wieght of a man.

Safest knot? The one we use is a bowline and a safety line (another halyard) attached to the climber.

My topclimber came without any rope (I bought it quite a few years ago here in Oz) so I played it safe and bought 10mm spectra. I've since climbed many masts with it and it's not let me down. Unfortunately that may not help you as I weigh 65kg (a bit over 10 stone). I use two bowlines (one on the climber rope and one on the halyard) if I don't need to get to the top of the mast. If I need to get to the very top, I'll use a fisherman's knot. Not sure how safe it is, but it's not let go on me so far.

As I often climb the mast by myself, for my safety line I use a second halyard pulled reasonably tight and secured both ends and then attach piece of 6mm spectra to it with a Klemheist Knot. I then tie the tails of the 6mm line to my topclimber seat. The klemheist knot is brilliant, easy to tie and works well. I can actually attach my 6mm spectra via a klemheist knot to my SS rigging wire and it will hold my weight.

You can actually make a relatively cheap climbing system using a good climbing harness and a couple of short lengths of 6mm spectra (a klemheist knot plus a bowline in each tail makes your stirrups).
