In last nights prog. the 'Holy Trinity' were plouging a field to plant rape seed in order to make petrol. I thought this would make bio diesel ? As usual they made complete prats of themselves. Dave.

TG is supposed to be an entertainment show not a documentary so it's allowed some poetic licence. Last night's show was still funny but not as funny as last week's

Ethanol is a fermentation process of sugary organic matter. Brazilian VW Beetles and some new Saabs run on it instead of petrol. Bio diesel is refined vegetable oil. TG are planting an oil seed crop, to make bio diesel. Both are considered "Alternative " fuels and the UK government are very keen on these fuels as they believe it will break the UK's dependence on imports from axis of evil countries. Oh, and they may also be nearly carbon neutral, hence, should carry a reduced duty to encourage their use. Ummm...

The local Malaysian planters are cutting jungle down like mad and planting rows and rows of palm oil trees. I can tell you they don't look half as pretty as the jungle plants and trees and the troops of monkeys don't like em either, so their moving into town and causing a congestion problem. The horrible black smoke coming from the palm oil plant must be doing wonders for the ozone layer, I'm just wondering what fuel is best in the long run.

Ah yes, the flip side to going green. Now I hear the Mexicans cannot afford the corn flour for their tortillas as the US has spiked the price by buying into corn for bio fuel production. Scaling up bio fuel production will create very significant changes to agriculture not all of which will be eco friendly

I thought it was all true....

Just moved home and the new gaff has a 2 acre paddock.

Just what I need, bit of ploughing, spot of tilling (whatever that is) and whop in the rape-seed. April/May, pretty little yellow flowers, July'ish, hack it all down, stuff it in a press, bottle the liquid, shake it up a bit and pop it in the boat. KAD32's should run a treat and one-in-the-eye for El Gordo....

Or are you suggesting I might be a touch optimistic about all this...?

25 acres, planted with oil seed rape to give them 15 tonnes of rape seed oil with which the plan to make 3,000 gallons of "petrol" (though not sure how they intend to do that).
