Off on a jaunt around the South Coast and Northern France for 3/4 Months on our newly aquired Yacht.

I need to put together a tool kit, I have aready procured the following items, any suggestions for othre items appreciated.

Cable Cutters
Hacksaw
Soldering Iron
Normal Socket set and Screw Drivers
Cordless Drill

sometimes the 3/8 socket set for the smaller nuts is the only wayto get one to fit.
araldite
gaffer tape
insulating tape
electricians crimping tool and suitable selection
heat shrink
fuses
hammer
sikaflex
wet & dry + small wood block
gelcoat repair

and last but not least some elastoplast!

Dictionary / phrase book to help asking for the tools you didn't think you'd need while in France /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Allen keys
Self amalgamating tape
Stilsons
Fast grab glue
Spare jubilee clips
Spare flexible hose
Emergency repair tapered wood bungs
Patent prop clearing tool, as described in the 'fouled by fishing gear' thread.

No-one's mentioned Mole Grips. Ideal as emergency clamp or for holding nearly impossible to reach nuts whilst you tighten or slacken the screw.
Long nose pliers, also essential. (try undoing split pins without)

Some wonderful stuff called Milliput.

It's like plastic padding except it comes in two rolls, like pasticine, which are mixed together in the hand. It can be used on wet surfaces and will cure even under water in about 10 minutes.
I get it from a little hardware shop locally (near Milton Keyne)but a google search may turn it up.

afterthoughts

Nobody has mentioned any woodworking tools; saw, chisel, sharpening stone, plane
How about a filterwrench for changing the filters?
Varnishing kit for any brightwork.
It could be useful to make sure your tools will actually be able to get off the bits most likely to come off in regular maintenance - slackening fan belt , changing raw water pump impeller.

Then

theres the question of spare..

As above but....

torch
snap-off knifes, large and small, and blades
knee-pads

Re: fouled by fishing gear thread?

OK my suggestion is that you weld a stainless knife blade to a length of, say, pipe. Weld a bar on the blade end hooked back at a small angle, so you can hook it round junk in the prop and rip said junk to shreds. Fill pipe with foam so it floats, have a lanyard but don't attach it to yourself in case you have something heavy on the end.

Butcher's hacksaw blades are stainless and may be better.
maybe weld two blades in a 'V'.
All better than a knife on a stick.
I wonder if long handled secateurs would do the trick?

Some sort of anchor retrieval system. I read recently about using a small loop of chain attached to a line to slide down and over the anchor stem to pull the head back. Sounds like it should work but its hard to come up with a foot or so of chain in a hurry unless you already have it on board.

Depending on your own abilities you might consider wet suit, swim mask snorkel and a weight belt.(about 8ikgs) all this to allow inspection and freeing of prop and swim fins if you might need to retrieve anchor. good luck olewill
