Tony Bullimore\'s \"record\" plans?

I don't want to take anything away from anyone intent on sailing single handed round the Southern Ocean, especially in a huge boat like his, but I do wonder who ratifies these records. His route is less than 22,000 miles yet he says he is intent on taking Ellen Macarthur's 72 day record when she sailed some 5,000 miles further.
Is it me or does something not add up? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Tony Bullimore\'s \"record\" plans?

I guess the record is for a circumnavigation, not for taking the longest route. It begs the question however, why not simply sail in a circle round the Southern Ocean, or does the record have to include excursions in to both hemispheres?

Re: Tony Bullimore\'s \"record\" plans?

Surely to count as a circumnavigation he would have to pass a point on the earth opposite the point from which he started. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
That would be somwhere north of the Azores.

Re: Tony Bullimore\'s \"record\" plans?

I understood to be a recorded circumnavigation the yacht needs to get up and across the equator at some point on its way round the southern half of the globe. So a start from say Cape Town, a swift circular route as close to the ice pack as possible - plus a jag up from Cape Horn to cross the equator and then back down to Cape Town - is possible the shortest circumnavigators race course one could find.
But to challenge Ellens record, I think Bullimore would need to also change sex, loose a few years, and modify his humility to even come close......

I think for record purposes, a sailing circumnav has to start and finish at the same port, cross every meridian plus the equator and be at least 21,600 nm long. So, I guess his route is OK.

I agree Swagman.

It'll be some feat to beat Day Melons record.

BTW does anyone know if he has a web site/man cam thing on board so we can follow his attempt?

Re: Tony Bullimore\'s \"record\" plans?

A quote from Bullimore's website:

The course has been sanctioned by the World Sailing Speed Record Council www.sailspeedrecords.com/ which will time Bullimore's start and finish from Tasmania and monitor his progress around the world. The distance is exactly the same as if he started from Ushant on the north west tip of France where Dame Ellen Macarthur, the current record holder began her 71 day voyage last year.

You have to wish the old fella well – 67 years young. He’s still smoking by the way, but will not carry any tobacco for the voyage in an effort to pack it in.

Parts of the boat are over twenty years old and it would probably be a miracle if he beats Dame Ellen’s record.

I agree - and wish him well. He is a better man than I, Gunga Din.

The shortest route may not be the quickest. The skill is to look for an advantage in weather patterns that any route affords and exploit it. If bullimores got it wrong he will fail.
