The yacht I recently purchased came with a Seagull outboard which it turns out needs work. I bought a cheap Tohatsu 5 of unknown vintage to get me going in the short term but it turns out it is Aircooled and works wonderfully. Light smooth and quiet and well worth preserving but I can't find any service info or specs on it anywhere. Can anyone help?

Have never come across an air cooled One.
Does it have fins like a motorbike engine?
Or has it got a Cowl, like a hood over the Cylinder head bit, whereby the flywheel has vanes which blows air into the cowl/hood to cool the Top End?
Must mave some arrangement like that, because a 5hp engingine won't be dashing along quickly enough for air to cool it like a bike or moped or similar.
When I say I have never come across One, Tohatsu make I mean!
Sorry I can't help, just asking, cos I find it interesting.
Think it may be quite old.
Could be wrong though.
Why do I find it interesting?
Dunno, maybe I should get out more often (before anybody else mentions it) someone on ere will enlighten Us no doubt! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If it's working why do you need the docs? Is it really aircooled or is the exhaust manifold watercooled... that may be the same as the seabee or ailsa thomas engine which does have an impellor down at the gearbox for exhaust cooling. Otherwise it should be maintenance free apart from the usual fuel considerations.

The reason for the need of docs is so it can be properly serviced which will hopefully keep it running. The cylinder block has a finned construction and there is a vaned rotor above it in the starter hood so the motor is Air Cooled (my first hint was that there was no tell tale water discharge!) however you may be onto someting with the cooled manifold as there is a small pipe behind the prop at the exhuast vent. Sorry I am not familiar with the seabee or ailsa models. I will contact Tomatsu via the website but anything on the site is dedicated to selling new ones so I just have to hope for the best.

Dont know about the Tohatsu or the others mentioned but some small Archimedes/ Crescents/ Volvo Penta outboards ( in the 1970s) were air cooled with a water cooled exhaust but relied on the prop to force water up to the exhaust manifold. They did not have a pump to do it. (I've got one)

Try the iBoats forums. Usually an excellent place for help with outboards. Quote the model details incl model/serial number if you go there though.
