Tom Cunliff\'sThe Complete Yachtmaster

Following my post last week, I am taking advantage of the kind gift of a 20quid Amazon gift certificate to purchase a book to get me through the above qualification.

Due odd working hours, I'm unable to do the usual night school classes. Is this considered to be the best book on the subject, or possibly there is something by another author I should be considering?

Roll on summer!

Thanks Nick

Superb book, one of my favourites. Generally covers the syllabus with practical advice and wit in abundance.

"Yachtmaster" by Philip Ouvry et al gives more precise coverage of the syllabus but without the advice.

Get both for an extra few pounds.

Great book. Tom's the man for the YM and i reckon its a 'must have'.

Certainly I found it very useful and still refer back to it.

Re: Tom Cunliff\'sThe Complete Yachtmaster

The two books are from two very different perspectives:-
Tom Cunliffe is an examiner for YM Practical.
Phil Ouvray and Pat Langley-Price are theory instructors.

Definitely get both!

Agree completely. The Ouvray and Langley-Pricebook of exercises supplementing the textbook is a must have for theory IMHO.

Tom's book is ideal, and if you want a set of navigation exercises you can do no better than the RYA book by Chris Slade and Sara Hopkinson - both YM Examiners sail and power.

I once crewed for Ouvry and Langley Price at an instructors' weekend race. We were rammed by another boat full of instructors!

Good luck with your examination when you do it.

The mind boggles at a boat load of instructors. Who gets to be grumpy? Who gets to ask baffling questions which can only be answer if you know colregs off by heart? Who makes the tea? No wonder they rammed you. All the best
