...unless they start pursuing boat-owners for a similar deal, which they may be entitled to do...

And incidentally, a friend of mine may have a similar problem - his parents were big LOTR fans - and he's called Aragorn...

Mordor, I.e.Hell

Well, not quite: it's a place where the biggest baddie lived. So not really underworld as such, but still, definitely the most evil location in Middle Earth in LOTR's times.

I had a 'Pippin' once. Nice boat, nice name. IMHO anyway.

But there's a world of difference between naming a private boat, and setting up a business. At 'The Hobbit' they are cashing in on the exisiting fame and following of Tolkiens work. I am sure Galadriel above would like to make money out of his boat, but I know the only money that changes hands there goes the other way as he pays his bills!

Utter BOLLOX. The pub has been so named for 20 years or so. The first Tolkein film was released in 2001.

The issue is not whether or not the pub is cashing in on the film, it's whether or not the Tolkien estate sold rights to the commercial exploitation of Tolkien's books. If it did, and the pub is exploiting the stories as a commercial activity they need a licence from the holder of the rights. The Hobbit was published in 1937, so long before the pub started cashing in on the name.

By the way, oldharry, a pippin is a type of apple, so no worries there.
