I was under the impression that the 2.5/3.5hp Nissan-derived outboards were all the same except for the paint colour and badge.
Today I was taking two of them apart, going to match up a leg and powerhead, and was surprised to find that they had a totally different drive shaft design.
My 1996 Tohatsu 3.5 has a stainless rod with a spline on the end, whereas the 2.5 (age unknown) has a square section hollow steel shaft. So my franken-engine plan is not going to work.
Just out of curiosity, does anybody know why the design changed? The solid shaft on the 3.5 is presumably stronger and better for the extra power? Or is it just a model age thing?
