I set out today to change the impeller on my 8HP 2 stroke. I undid the 4 screws that are just above the cavitation plate but the lower leg only dropped by about 1 inch. What else has to be undone so that the lower leg can be removed completely to get at the impeller housing?

never actually done this but planning to do mine and as I understand it you have to disconnect the gear shift linkage to completely separate the lower leg and get at the impellor. On the bigger engines you disconnect at the top of the change shaft, does not matter if in neutral or gear at the time

More than likely you have to disconnect the gear shift linkage. a screwhead should be just visible in the 1" gap linking the both ends of shift rod. No problem getting it out, but you will need to grip the head of the screw with nosepickers (or similar) to replace it.

Also the water pipe coming up from the pump could be reluctant to unstick from its grommetty thingy.
