hi there people i have recently bought the above outboard, it has done approx 14 hours running so according to tohatsu it has done the required running in time for full throttle. I am having problems with the outboard inadvertently stopping durring prelonged running both in neutral and in gear.......

things i have checked....tick over speed ......not to slow

oil ok

air vent on tank ok ......does anyone else suffer or have any ideas.....common faults etc.....

the only other thing i can think it may be is air in the fuel line.....but i dont think its this........

two things come to mind, the first is the air vent to the tank- make sure that this does open, and is opened fuly during running, otherwise it will stop the engine until the vacuum in the tank equalises.

The other possibility is dirt in the fuel is occasionaly blocking the jets, drain filter and re-fill, but also remove bowl from carb, and if there is any grit it may be visible.

I had a similar problem on my last suzuki outboard.
After trying all the obvious things I bought a piece of clear hose and put it from the tank to the fuel pump so I could see if the problem was with the petrol supply or further on (pump or carb).
I soon discovered that the engine was indeed being starved of petrol even though the vent was open.
The problem was that the fuel tap was partially blocked so that when the motor was stopped, enough fuel ran through to start the engine and tick over but when the engine demanded more it was starved and stopped (usually just at the wrong moment!).

I am just about to buy a new outboard and have been looking at either the 6hp 4 stroke Tohatsu or another suzuki.
I would be really interested to here what you think of the Tohatsu?

Good luck

Andrew

This may not be relevant, but in 1986 I bought a Kawasaki motor bike with only 600 miles. It was accident damaged, and I fitted another engine that came with the bike.

For the following 3 years I had problems with fuel starvation, and tried everything. It was only a few years ago I discovered the problem was that the carbs needed spraying with carb cleaner to remove the protective laquer they come with as new.

The bike had missed the service where this would have been done by the supplier.

Other than maybe losing the purchase price of a bottle of carb cleaner, it will not hurt to do this.

I agree with above post. It does sound like a blocked, or closed fuel tank breather.

Hi ,

I have just bought the sail drive version and have had it die with no aparent warning on three occasions. Thus far it has run about the same number of hours as yours. Has the proble resolved? I'd be intrested to here how it progresses
