I feel I have over-tightened the engine swivel screw as engine now will not sit in the fixed position. Can this be fixed by getting new screw or is it workshop job? My engine is in a well in my boat and can only be steered using the boats tiller, hence the need for it to be fixed.

Thanks.

Hi you will need to remove the friction bolt and have a look. If the thread on the bolt is stripped, its a new bolt. If the thread is stripped on the swivel clamp you can insert a helicoil

Can you remove the screw completely and check the threads? If they look OK then there's no point in buying a new screw. If the screw is still tight it doesn't sound like any threads are stripped and, in any case, stripping threads by hand turning is usually almost impossible. Unless you were using a spanner it sounds like something else is amiss although I don't know that engine.

Hi. Inside the swivel clamp you will find a friction pad, usually triangular in shape. As you turn the bolt it pushes the pad on to the leg. Make sure its still there.

You may have broken the friction band part #25 in the diagram below. If so you will have to separate the two halves of the swivel bracket and replace it.

What Richard and steve have said does not seem to tally with the exploded diagram unless all you have done is striped the thread in the wing nut

( I did it on an old engine of mine ... I had to make a new part!)

Thanks for your replies, much appreciated. I am not with the engine at the moment but I would say the thread on tightening screw is not stripped as tightened it using a spanner and it is has become solid ( not turn any further).

You've broken the friction band then I expect. IIRC mine was brass and broke easily. I made the new one from stainless steel

My Tohatsu 6 would never stay straight however much that screw was tightened- it now has an arrangement that allows a peg to be dropped into the carry handle, locking it in position. If you have the same issue you may need a similar solution or your replacement part number 25 is likely to break again. Let me know if you need to go down this route and i may have a photo somewhere.
