I'm thinking of getting one of these for our tender but can anyone explain what the difference is between the 4 and 5 hp engines - apart from one hp and £130!
They are the same weight and cc.

According to this and this there is SFA difference - same weight and engine size (102cc) so probably the difference in power is due to some restrictor or limiter fitted to the 4 hp version.

There'll be different carb jets too. My old two-stroke four was similarly spec'd to the 5.5 but had restrictor in the inlet and exhaust systems, the latter being cast in, so it's not always as simple as it seems.

I think wee four stroke outboards are an abortion.....much more trouble than they're worth but they will be less susceptible to exhaust pipe specs.

[/ QUOTE ] That as well - though I would class different jets as a restrictor or limiter /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]Agree 100% - that is why I got rid of both the 4 stroke 4hp yamahas I had and went back to (merc) 2 strokes (I picked up the Mercs cheaper than I could get the "equivelent" Tohatsus) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's exactly what I plan to do - presently have a Yamaha 4hp 4stroke which I find heavy and sluggish.
Sounds like if I can get hold of a different carb jet I should be able to boost the power a bit.

I've just had a word with a 'man that knows' and apparently the only difference between the two engines is a restrictor fitted in the reed chamber of the 4.
