Hello, no water coming through and out of the little tube under the engine. Is there an easy way to unblock this? The engine hadn't been run for 2 years. Is the impeller at the top or bottom of the shaft. I think it's different for models with or without the forward & neutral lever.

They do seem to be a bit prone to the tell-tale pipe blocking with salt crystals. You may be lucky and be able to simply poke a wire up the rubber hose, but if that doesn't fix it, then take the casings off and you'll be able to pull the hose off and rod straight into the metal pipe it attaches to. So far (fingers crossed) that's been as far as I've had to go with mine. First time we noticed the flow was reduced my mate blew up the hose and it cleared it. How hard? I think you need a non-smoker for the better lung capacity and pressure!

Incidentally, the impeller is at the bottom of the leg - immersion is your friend when priming a pump.

As suggested try blowing, try poking a wire up the hose but probably in the end you may well have to take the hose off and poke a wire into the fitting on the engine..

Remember that is only a telltale to tell you that the pump is working. the cooling water exits with the exhaust gas under water.


BTW the water pump is always at the bottom somewhere. If the engine has a neutral gear it is on top of the gear box and is driven by the vertical shaft. When the drive is fixed the pump may be behind the prop and driven by the prop shaft.
 
Common problem esp after a period of non use.

Mine requires a bit of poking up the tube, I do this with the engine running and stop once I get a dribble. This usually increases to normal flow over hte next hour of use.

If you are worried about a total failure in cooling flow tilt the engine slightly with it running in neutral, it is easy to see the water coming out of the leg.
 
Underneath the head is a bronze cover (10MM?) bolt. If you take take off and hold a hose against it (or buy the hose fitting) it should clear through and out through the pipe.
Changing the impeller looks like a quick and easy job, but each time I do it I consider binning the damn engine and buying a new one. Reconnecting the various gear rods drives me to dispair!!

Ha Ha, wish I'd known this yesterday, spent 1/2 hour replacing the impeller then 2 hours trying to get the coolant pipe to connect, much swearing and pinched fingers!
