Tohatsu 3.5 shear pin. Is there a spare??

Is there a place to mount a spare shear pin on this engine, I broke one at the weekend.

I have had look at the engine and manual and can't see any clip where one should be but wonder whether there is one hidden somewhere.

As you're going to need at least some water-pump pliers to remove the prop, why not tape it to their handle?

Just at the moment Phil I haven't got one due to a slight contratemps at the land/water interface off Cockshot point on Sunday. I was hoping there might be a spare on the engine somewhere but it isn't an issue as I can get some before I go back up.

Remove the spark plug cover and you may find a spare shear pin and prop split pin attached underneath.

The split pin for the mercury or mariner version is a much more robust pin but thus more liable to damage the prop.

Aquatics sell shear pins in little packs. I got some for my Tohatsu there (same thing) You need a pattern as there are several different sizes for different motors.

Did you know that you can often use a broken shear pin to get you home. (Or at least on a Johnson you can) The pin breaks in 2 places into 3 pieces. If you remove the middle bit then the two outer bits can be set half into the hole and half into the drive area of the hub.

Be very gentle when moving the motor into gear. If the revs are too high the inertia shock will snap the shear pin. olewill (hows that for rough and ready)

Thanks for the info re Aquatics. I was actually round the corner in Parsonage bay. The red buoys are still off Cockshot point /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

It occured to me reusing the pin was an option when I removed the prop. Fortunately I did not have to go so had no need for a temporary repair.
