Hi Folks,

Our trusty Tohatsu 3.5hp two stroke would not start and fuel was leaking from around the carburettor bowl. Fuel line appears sound . The outboard fell over in our garage before this problem but there does not appear to be damage visible.

Any clues on the cause of the problem would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Rob

Hi

Sounds as if the jolt in your garage has caused a stuck float. You need drop the float bowl and check for bent components then carefully clean and reassemble.

Good luck

You can get an accumulation of goo in the bowl that can cause the float to stick or the float needle to not seat properly. As previous post you need to take off the float bowl. Only 2 screws and the bowl is off. I usually remove the whole carb by loosening the clamp screw and you have the whole unit too hand.

+1, Happens regularly on my 3.5 Johnson.

Agree with both quotes on the Tohatsu.

If you drop the bowl be very careful with the bits that fall out!!! And the order in which they should go back

The goo will probably shock you as well.

Expect a considerable improvement in performance - wonder how I know this?

Yes I've had the little needle valve fall out. I've discovered it's best done with the engine upside down then you just lift off the bowl after undoing the two screws holding it on.
