Get some Citric acid (from butchers merchants) mix 200/300g in a couple of ltrs.
Soak the offending tap and stainless fitting for a month or a few days if you can warm it. The acid will corrode away the tap at its thinest points (its basically iron) and leave the stainless untouched but shiny....tap comes out with undamaged thread area.
